Working visit to the National Institute of Chemistry

2019-12-04

Kumar Sarang, NaMeS PhD student in Environmental Chemistry Group went along with his supervisor - Rafał Szmigielski, for a one week visit to National Institute of Chemistry in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The main objective of the visit was to discuss new research ideas and exchange the technical knowledge related to the field of atmospheric chemistry to boost the future collaboration with Slovenian partner institute i.e. NIC. The emphasis during the discussion was laid on the future research plans related to Sarang’s secondment at TROPOS and NIC in the coming year 2020. They were offered an opportunity to visit the NIC laboratories and become acquainted with the instrumentation facilities available so that the future Sarang’s research at NIC could be structured and planned accordingly. Apart from this, laboratory tour covered the advanced microscope, laser and electrochemistry laboratories. Dr. Irena Grgic also arranged a visit for them at Aerosol Company, which manufactures the Magee Scientific TOC analyzer, which is very useful for online and offline measurement of brown carbon in the atmosphere. Researchers delivered seminars on their research in the Environmental Chemistry Group at IPC PAS and the titles were as follows:

  • Kumar Sarang: Aqueous-Phase Reaction Kinetics of Green Leaf Volatiles with Hydroxyl, Sulfate and Nitrate Radicals
  • Rafal Szmigielski: Organic Mass Spectrometry as a Tool to Advance Chemical Complexity of Fine Particles in the Atmosphere: How Deep We Can Go?
