Microfluidic device for monodisperse droplets production

The invention describes geometry of the microfluidic device for production of monodisperse micrometer-sized emulsions. Presented device splits a sample into a library of monodisperse droplets of one liquid in another, immiscible liquid. Device
produces aqueous droplets in fluorinated oil containing surfactant, 30-100 nL in volume, coefficient of variation<5%. Other droplets can be produced using microfluidic devices based on proposed invention.

Advantages / Innovative aspects

Presented invention outperforms solutions found in literature as it offers:

  • higher throughput of droplet production
  • wider flowrate rate range for which the produced droplets are still monodisperse

Use

  • encapsulation of biologically active ingredients
  • monodisperse gel particles production
  • production of nanoparticles
  • culturing microorganisms in droplet
  • in vitro drug screening
